There IS an adjustment. It is an Allen head setscrew that in on the REAR of the lead screw. Since you already have the can off, it's fairly easy to spot on the rear wall of the gearbox. Check to see that all ten (10) ball bearings are in the front, if it's that loose, one or more may have fallen out. They are 0.125" dia, and are available at most True Value or Ace Hardware stores.

DON'T overtighten, just enough to take out the "play" or side-to-side movement of the knob.

Right then, so far this R-4C is now working, I have managed to find the transformer, xtals and NB board, thanks for all those who responded, what a great group this is :-), the radio works (mainly alignment) thanks to the xtals from my other 4C, however the PTO bearings are very loose so the knob moves up and down a lot more than it should, I have removed the unit and taken a quick look, now before I strip and damage it are there any procedures I should be doing in order to remove the play in the bearings. I took the can off the rear and looked inside for an adjuster but non seems to be there.
