A few things...

First.... Take digital photographs of the affected areas. You probably won't need them, but if you do you'll be glad you have them!

The DR-7 is not particularly difficult to take OUT. There are a LOT of pins, and when they haven't been removed for a while (30 years?) the tend to stick. So it will take quite a bit of force to get it started. Also, there is a single screw near the center of the board that has to be taken out! :-)

The peripheral connectors are NOT keyed in any way. They are pretty obvious as to which one goes where, but can be reversed. I mark one end of both board and cable connector with a marker.

The wire puller is helpful, I made mine from a section of heavy duty coat hanger.

The displays fit into a sort of "pocket" in the front panel, and don't lift UP to remove the DR-7. You have to lift the back end of the board first, and then move the board to the rear slightly before lifting it out.

The readouts solder in on right angle headers. You need to make a "shim" before removing the old one that you can insert below the new one to line it up at the correct height. By the way, the original displays were selected for equal brightness between the 2 and 4 section units. Apparently there was quite a bit of variation in brightness possible.

Reinstalling the DR-7 can be a little tricky. Before starting, examine the pins on the bottom of the DR-7 to ensure that they are straight and lined up properly. A drop of DeoxIT in each socket isn't a bad idea. You insert the displays into the pocket at the front first, then lower the rear while lining up the pins. You can "sorta" see the pins while lowering the board, make sure they all go into the right place!

It's a LOT easier the second or third time!!

A reasonable alternative are the displays offered at <http://www.df4nw.de/>.

Have a tr-7, that one of the of the 4 section display has failed, lost the bottom vertical parts. I have to pull the digital board to install the aux-7 board that I made up WARC modules for. I have located a good 4 section readout. How hard is it to replace the 4 section readout? I can't find any detail of the assembly and nothing in the service manual. Is this a unsolder/solder job ? or do the modules plug into a header? on the digital board. I noticed the tool for pulling the board loose...good idea? should not be hard to fabricate,or is there a better way. Any help on this would be appreciated very much.
