Save your fuses (and your transformer), build a light bulb current limiter for
troubleshooting. Here are some variants on the idea:

I built mine with just a cord and an inline power switch and lamp socket wired
in series, and a female recaptacle at the other end. You can get as fnacy as
you want with it.
