The D-104, with or without amplifier, should sond good on Drake gear. (The 'G'
stand has no amplifier).  The amplifier (really an impedance matching buffer)
is not really needed, but should have no problems driving a high impedance rig.
 No amplifier is better, and best is no amplifier with an additional 470K or
more resistor in series with the mic element.

Before blaming the microphone, it would be a good idea for the OP to check his
carrier oscillator alignmnet.
