I don't know what if anything the mesh plates do for operation of the
tube. I'd say stay with the major brands such as Sylvania, RCA, GE,
Mullard, etc. The lesser brands MAY or MAY NOT have been built by one
of the majors, but it's difficult or impossible to tell. Also, some
tubes of any brand seem to be noisier than others in the 3rd Mixer
position. I sometimes have to select from two or three to find a quiet
one. The good news is, once you find a good one, it will last for many
years.
