Peter and others,

I don't typically run my Drake linears on 110 volts so my experiences there are
limited. However, I can still afford a comment or two which may or may not be
useful.

Typically, a decent set of tubes with properly operating power supply will
provide about 900-1,000 watts DC output, with the power selector switch in the
SSB position. This is on say 80 and 40 meter with the power dropping off to
maybe 750-850 watts on 10 and 15 meters. The 500 watts on 15 seems a bit low
based upon the amps I own and have serviced.

I believe your power levels might be due to either the condition of the tubes,
and/or the condition of the electrolytic capacitors. While the resistors in
the power supplies are common failures, I don't believe they could contribute
to low power output. Too, I'm assuming you are using a reasonably accurate
power meter. What you might want to do too is check how much input power you
have and compare it with the output power you are obtaining. Please note that
the HV meter circuit may or may not be in calibration for calculating input
power. As a final note, if you are using a modern solid state rig, it might be
going into power foldback if the input SWR to the linear is above 1.5:1 or so;
input coils out of adjustment or modified for MARS, CAP, etc. could be a
contributing factor.

Please share your experiences with the DRAKELIST so we all can learn with you.

Evan, K9SQG

Subject: [Drakelist] L4-B Question

My L4-B puts out around 800 watts on 40 (120v) but only 600 on 20. Both
antennas
are fed identically and matching is the same. It puts out 500 on 15. Does this
suggest that I should replace components (I'm sure the resistors are
candidates)
or is this just the nature of the beast?

Thanks in advance,

Peter W2CDO
