Switching to EXT MUTE, CAL or NB _does_ put the R-4A in MUTE, 'unless'
you have a shorting plug in the MUTE jack on the back panel. This is to
allow the transmitter to mute the receiver when the two are cabled together.
The 4 Series tunes faster than most new radios. They tune at 25 kHz /
rev of the MAIN TUNING knob, while newer rigs tune often tune at 10 or
even 5 kHz / rev. Many of the newer radios (going back to my 1986
TS-940 and beyond) have a 'selectable' tuning rate. The digital modes
(PSK31) and others are MUCH easier to tune with a slower tuning rate.
I learned on a surplus aircraft receiver that tuned over 100 kHz / rev
with a tiny knob, so developed a 'safecracker's touch'! The R-4A still
feels 'slow' to me! :-)
If you still have problems with SSB you may have a BFO or other Product
Detector problem in the receiver.

Another odd thing is the tuning is extremely sensitive on SSB. I have
to tune very slow to get the audio to be understandable. Sometimes
it's near impossible to tune a SSB signal clearly. AM broadcast and CW
-- no problem.
I did a side-by-side comparison with my ICOM 746 and the R4A is
receiving as good, if not better. And the overall audio is much more
pleasing and adjustable with the R4A.
I obviously have a problem with the calibrator and NB... and maybe the
sensitive tuning is just the nature of an R4A... I don't know.
Suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
