The plate meter will only kick to 100-150ma on voice peaks when set properly. Adjust the mic gain so that is what you have..depending on the mic you use, 12 oClock might be fine. Don't try to get it to peak up to the loaded value. the dynamics of the meter movement prevent it from responding fast enough to show the actual peak current. A scope can be a valuable tool to monitor for a while untile you are used to what the "Normal" meter response looks like.
