tinny speaker in my MS-7 with something more modern and more

directly fit the mounting points as the original Drake
speaker without having to drill or otherwise mod it further?

If this is not a general comment on the type "scratchy
and tinny" sound like possibly the voice coil is rubbing, is
that possible or is this just a terrible sounding speaker?
One way to test is to put a 1.5 volt battery across the
voice coil and listen to it. If the speaker is OK it will
just make a thump, if the VC is distorted or out of
centering you will hear it rub and make various noises. A
very low frequency tone will show up problems even better.
You may have to remove and measure the speaker. Bolt
patterns for speakers have been pretty much standardized for
a long time so it may be possible to find a stock
replacement for it.
