I am able with my R4C to set the band switch to 3.5 and then tune the preselector to a higher peak. This gives me WWV at 5 MHz and also the 60 meter SW band around it. Very 73. Kevin :) Amateur Radio: K7RX

Check out this link http://www.dproducts.be/drake_museum/03_1971_pdf.htm from The Drake Virtual Museum website. It states: "It is possible to receive the 5-MHZ transmission from WWV on a Drake R-4A by setting the band switch to 3.5 MHz, the tuning dial to 3.6325 MHz, a n d t h e p r e s e l e c t o r t o 4 0 m e t e r s . The s e c o n d harmonic of the VFO beats with the 5-MHZ WWV signal to produce a signal at the first i-f. ~ Donald R. Stickle, K2OXP" This technique works fine on my B line. Of course, the 41 meter SW broadcasting band is "free." 73, Tony N3WAK In a message dated 12/3/2010 12:01:08 P.M. Suggestions on how I should upgrade/improve this rig and how to determine what crystals and filters I need for AM reception would be appreciated. In the 1970s I had a Drake C-line station and a chart that told me what crystals I needed to install to hear WWV and foreign broadcasts. The AM filter is a bit of a problem, as the 'B' has no optional filter capability. It 'MIGHT' be possible to bypass the Passband Tuner and rely on the 'roofing' filter in the 1st IF which is a 6 kHz wide half-lattice filter. The widest b/w for the Passband Tuner is 4.8 kHz which is fine for picking off ONE sideband of an AM signal. There is a crystal chart in the manual, but all you need to do is add 11.1 MHz to the frequency you want at the bottom of a band. WWV and 30M would be 10.0 MHz plus 11.1 equals a 21.1 MHz crystal. International Crystal Mfg has all the info, just tell them what frequency you want to listen to. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 2-C/2-NT, 4-B, C-Line& TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs <www.k4oah.com> Dave wrote: > I just bought a stock Drake R-4B. > > Suggestions on how I should upgrade/improve this rig and how to > determine what crystals and filters I need for AM reception would be > appreciated. Because of the noise level on most HF stations really wide bandwidth is not very practical. There are a few very strong ones but mostly not. BTW, its often possible to improve reception of stations with severe selective fading by receiving it as an SSB signal using the tunable IF to get rid of the original carrier. -- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles WB6KBL [email protected] ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Drakelist mailing list [email protected] http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist End of Drakelist Digest, Vol 30, Issue 4 ****************************************
