All R-390As are excellent with the Collins versions being the "gold
standard." Here is what I recommend:

1. A complete copy of the original MIL manual.

2. Spare ballast tubes (or a suitable substitute) if you plan to use it a
lot.

3. A light touch on the slugs if you plan to do an alignment. They have
been known to break off and drop down inside the radio. Not fun to replace.

I serviced these beauties for many, many years in the Navy. A truly
great CW or AM receiver, but kind of sucks for SSB (no product detector).
If you can find a CV-591/URR SSB adapter, buy it! You might also look for
one of the short racks that was designed to house an R-390A/URR and two (2)
of the converters; just use a 3" blank panel in the unused upper slot and
put the CV-591 underneath the radio.

Good Morning All:

I know this is slightly off topic but that great minds think alike.

Over the weekend, I took the opportunity to acquire a R390A..ser 3981
Collins tagged, 1955. It appears to be unaltered, complete, even to the
original military power cord. Appears to have never had any modules
changed. Anyway, I have found loads of info online including the y2k
manual.

I suspect there are others on this list that seriously work with these
amazing radios ..are there any reflectors or forums you would recommend
similar to this one but for the R390A?

Thanks
