All, Thanks for all your comments. I think I should comment that I was not
suggesting for anyone to rebuild an L4B amplifier working or otherwise in this
manner. This particular project was just a dream of mine for many years,
probably more of a challenge to prove it could be done. Approching 70, I
find dreams start to fade fast and challenges get much more difficult. I am
glad I can still do enjoyable projects like this.
The L4B chassis I used was already a parts chassis, with the majoring of the
parts and front panel missing before I acquired it. So rather than taking off
what parts remained, tossing the chassis, I choose to rebuild it and giving the
amplifier a second life, and probably out live me.
You are right, the idea is similar to the Drake L75. But I already have every
amplifier Drake made, I wanted something unique, a one of a kind, and this was
the result. Like I said in the article, it was a labor of love. And for me
thinkering with the radios is one enjoyable aspect of ham radio.

I personally think Ron did a great job on the article. For the builder or tech
person this is a great project and as far as I am concerned I would rather have
a table top amp using a 3-500Z than amps using the old sweep tubes 572's or
811's. This conversion is not for everyone, but Ron Baker is one of the top
authorities on Drake, Heathkit and Collins equipment and he know his stuff.
Personally I want to thank Ron for providing a fantastic website, very
interesting articles and helpful upgrades to our Drake equipment. Also for the
tech support if someone needs help. Keep up the good work Ron and don't let
anyone stop you from your great work you to to preserve the old tube equipment
and to keep us informed.

I tend to agree, I wouldn't want to do that to an L-4 either, but as 'HFN says
"The theme of this article presents one possibility in giving the old girl a
new life."
I can see folks wanting an all-in-one solution...and if they somehow end up
with an L-4 RF deck, no problem.
