Hi Dale,
I once connected a DDS directly to my R-4A's fixed freq crystal connector on
the side, replacing the premix signal (band xtal + VFO). You just need to
inject 5645 KHz (IF) + desired frequency. The DDS had an option to set any
arbitrary offset for display (-5645 in this case), so it worked very nice. One
of the obvious benefits is that you don't need extra band xtals or something
like FS-4/crystal eliminator to cover other bands. But for it to be really
usable, it needed a buffer amp and probably more customized firmware. I didn't
go that far. By doing this I also learned that the 5995 KHz LO and/or 50Kc BFO
drifts quite a bit and adding a digital dial or using a DDS does not make too
much sense unless something in the receiver is broken. So, I decided not to
pursue any further.

I have been looking at the 5-6 digital vfo kits that are on the market. I have
written all of them about adapting to the drake 4 line. None have offered any
info or help ,other than they make a vfo kit but have no applications info to
give. Has anyone in the group done such a conversion> would like to build up a
digital remote vfo. I don't want to reinvent the wheel if some one has worked
this out,and also I do not have the background to design a interface circuit if
needed. With all the kits out there sure seems like a do able project.
