My first good radio was a B Line, which I used for 4 or 5 years, then upgraded to a C Line. I had a few C Lines over the next 10-15 years with all the Sherwood mods & filters, and used them to get on the DXCC Honor Roll. I had a couple of S Lines over the years, and still have one now, but always preferred the Drake twins for CW operation.
The combination of crystal filters and passband tuning makes it much easier (for me) to tune in and isolate weak signals than the variable BFO on the Collins. The R4C with the Sherwood mods is one of the best CW receivers I have ever used, and I still used mine as a second receiver along with more modern and allegedly better solid state transceivers (TS-940, FT-1000, OMNI VI+, K-2). When listening to weak signals, especially on the low band, I was often able to copy them better on the R4C than on any other radio. I hooked up a 75S3C like this a few times, too, but it never lasted long before going back to the boat anchor station. Theoretically, the Collins has a better transmitter, since it uses 6146s instead of sweep tubes, but I never had any trouble with 6JB6s and always felt they worked fine. I have very little experience using either rig on phone, but feel they both have excellent audio both on transmit and receive. That S Line sure does look cool sitting on the desk, though! 73, Mike W3MC -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Garey Barrell Sent: Thursday, 16 June, 2011 08:27 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Drakelist] Collins and Drake Compared ALL - Once again, _WHY PRIVATE E-MAILS_. DO YOU "LACK THE COURAGE OF YOUR CONVICTIONS"? AFRAID SOMEONE MIGHT DISAGREE?? WHAT!?!?!?!?!? Like Paul, I'm interested in others responses, whether I agree with them or not. Aside from losing those opinions today, they are also left out of the archives.
