Just to stir the pot a bit - the 6AU6 in the PTO of my R-4 works quite well and
replacements (6AU6A or 7543) are easily obtained. It's also much easier to
replace a tube than a transistor. I suppose that Drake had reasons for
replacing tubes with transistors as the R-4 evolved into the R-4C, but my R-4
is quite stable and I only wish thet my T-4X had the same PTO.
