Cool. Yeah, I'm taking a night off but will return to it later. I got this
receiver from the same place as the "parts-rig" T-4XB: the original owner
did a lot of mods to the transmitter and there's an extra knob on the front
panel that I believe controls the level of the 50 kc IF signal on a marked
RCA jack on the back (in one of the SPARE locations). From looking at the
transmitter, I'm thinking he was into wideband AM and so I'm figuring I'll
have to undo at least a few things in this receiver (step 1 will be removal
of that extra knob - I'll put a headphone jack there so it will look almost
"normal").
I've got to go to my attic and find a suitable box for the R-4A PTO to send
to you. I am still not convinced that there's anything wrong with it but
will get verification by having you go through it.
With Shelby coming up, there may be some more rigs and parts thrown into the
mix after Labor Day :)

The simple answer is yes, you should be able to transceive either way with
any of the 4 separates.
The receiver should have only a volt or so of Premixer signal at the INJ
jack, the MAIN TUNING fiducial should be lit and the receiver should work
with no cables!!
The transmitter INJ should be the same, except in XMTR control there
should be a few volts of -DC (-30? don't recall for certain,) along with
the Premixer signal coming out of the INJ. This is the voltage that cuts
off the Premixer tube in the receiver and may or may not turn off the R-4B
fiducial!
The TRANSCEIVE switch in the transmitter disables the Premixer signal in
the transmitter with hard switch contacts in the RCVR position so there is
no need for a control voltage from the receiver.
So if it doesn't transceiver EITHER way with the INJ cable installed, I
gotta think the INJ connector is miswired at one end or the other, almost
certainly in the R-4B.
The CD should help in figuring out what's missing!! Don't forget that the
photos can be blown up at least 600% to see 'up close'.. :-)

I haven't pulled the covers off my recently-acquired R-4B but do notice
that the PO replaced all the RCA connectors on the rear. I have the
correct INJ cable and it works fine with my R-4A and the same T-4X.
What voltages should I see at the INJ jack of the R-4B? I'm assuming
there's a low-level RF signal with a negative bias. True?
