He replaced the tube. I just fixed a T-4XC that exhibited a cold or broken solder joint this month, in 2013. Joint was soldered in 1977.
Not quite the old "House, MD" maxim of it never being Lupus. If swapping the tube brings no resolution, check all the connections. That means both tube socket and all solder joints.
