Dream Title A LESSON IN A MOSQUE
by Hugh
Date of Dream 11/14/99 a.m.
Dream #1144
I am in a city, somewhere in Egypt, with an older man. We join a line of
people standing beside
a wall waiting to enter a mosque. Dirty, bearded, burnoosed locals
importune us to come and climb tall,
conical mounds that they have made from the black mud beside the river.
Tourists rent skis from these
locals to ski down the mounds. Two spaces behind me is an Englishman in a
stiff, turn-of-the-century
collar. He passes a piece of paper currency to me saying with gruff
urgency, "Here, give that to him!" I
hand the money to one of the locals, who retires, bowing and touching his
forehead. Another man
standing in front of me, who is also wearing a stiff, upright collar, turns
and says, "You shouldn't have
done that." Following the line I round a post, passing through a gate into
the courtyard before the
mosque. Here I find myself behind several young men in Citadel cadet
uniforms. * The line I am in is
merging with another line already inside the courtyard. I am not sure how I
ought to do this. I don't
know what the local customs are and am worried about giving offense. Some
of the cadets ahead of me
cut into the line in a group, others wait and merge alternately. The cadet
immediately ahead of me, a
short boy with dark hair cut short on the sides, turns to me and says,
"It's not worth the trouble. Let's
wait." I am still not sure. It seems we could be stuck waiting a very long
time which will annoy those
behind us. I am inside a room in the mosque. The floor is covered with a
Persian rug, primarily dark red,
blue and white, in a pattern of large circles connected with stylized
vinework. The imam tells us to split
up into groups of five. I go to a circle to my right where I am joined by
two women. One is N.D.,an older woman of my acquaintance, the other is a
younger woman with heavy, dark eyebrows. We assume a kneeling posture
around the
circle, facing inward. The women put their foreheads to the carpet and
stretch their arms out before them.
This looks uncomfortable and I consider kneeling in what I think of as "the
Buddhist style", with arms
parallel to my body, but decide this might be impolite and, so, I stretch
my arms out like the others. I am
in a smaller room on what seems to be a balcony above the main floor of the
mosque. Only the dark girl,
N.D. and the imam are with me. There is a large-screen television sitting
at an angle to the balcony railing.
The imam tells us that N.D.is going to present a lesson. She stands beside
the television and as she
speaks I see pictures of her on the screen. She is shown in various
postures, each of which is subsequently
overlaid with triangles. The object is to demonstrate the basic triangular
nature of our bodies and
everything that we can do with them. N.D. says that this inherent
triangular bias prevents us from ever
fully understanding the Divine, which is circular. I am in the midst of a
crowd in a narrow place between
the rough, weathered plank walls of some barns or sheds. Everything is
dusty and hot. Along one wall a
crude table leans at an angle. The top is divided, like an old-fashioned
work bench, into long, rectangular
troughs. These are filled with various foods, mostly of the bean, couscous
and humus sort. I notice, with
dismay, that one trough contains clams, which I am certain will have
spoiled in this dirty, hot place. I
approach the dark haired cadet behind whom I stood, earlier, in line. He
looks around and says
enthusiastically, "Looks pretty good right now, doesn't it?" I marvel at
this and say, "Well, don't eat the
clams." Laughing he says, "That's all we'd need when we get arrested." and
I respond, "Yes, nothing
enhances a case of severe diarrhea like ..." The cadet interjects,
grinning, "Penetration!" and I am
disturbed at his nonchalance. It seems to me he is taking a potentially
very serious situation all too
lightly.

Comments by Dreamer * Citadel cadet uniforms, it might be noted, have
stiff, upright collars.

N.D., I recently discovered, survived ovarian cancer.
