I tried your suggested patches to lib/GL/mesa/src/drv/mga/mgatexmem.c.
I still occasionally get the message:
Couldn't alloc placeholder sz 40000 ofs 80000
Memory heap 0x8c27cd0:
Offset:00000000, Size:00040000, U.
...
This mainly happens when switching back and forth between different
Gnome/Sawfish workspaces, meaning that the window manager (sawfish) is
calling XUnmapWindow and XMapWindow on the top-level frames containing
my GLX windows. The messages occur as a result of the XMapWindow
calls.
I am not sure the patch actually reduced the frequency of the messages
or the texture garbling.
