Let'me straight this out, since it's mainly my fault that the Devel FAQ 
(http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/faq/hardware.html#RADEON-8500-PLANS) isn't 
clear about it:

Kevin Martin is the one working on the Radeon 8500. He has benn working on 
the 2D driver and recentely made a status update here in a thread started 
by you 
(http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=735456&forum_id=7177)

Keith Whitwell has been working working in supporting a very important 
feature existing in Radeon 7500 and 8500 cards - transform & lighting. He 
has been working only on the Radeon 7500 card, but to come to this it was 
necessary to revamp all driver structure.

So if you would like to test the driver, keep watching this list, as it 
will be the first place were news regarding it will be available.

I hope this has enlightened this subject a little more. (I really have to 
update that FAQ though..)
