Intel i845/i852/i855/i865 are not "old" chipsets.  The latter 3 
are brand new.

I agree with that mostly.

I advocate opening hardware specs, either completely, or at least
under some form of NDA to developers willing, able, and capable
of working on support.  If companies don't however, that is their
choice of course, and to some degree I can also respect that.  
Their hardware may possibly however not be supported at all by
open source operating systems, or may be supported poorly.  
Either way, there are always alternative hardware for consumers
to choose from.
