Yeah, I don't think regular X is problematic. The Xv stuff used to be
quite messy, but even that seems simpler these days (although I also 
haven't had any real reason to worry about it any more, so maybe I just 
_think_ it's cleaner these days).

The lack of commit rights to the X tree might be a problem for some, but I 
don't think regular 2D X has anywhere _near_ the kind of lack of people 
and time that DRI ends up having.

Partly because the problem set is simpler, I'm sure. But also largely 
because the abstraction issues _have_ been worked on for a long time and 
it's just easier to do a driver these days as a result.
