Roland gets the big cookie for reminding me of the thing that never became
obvious to me: When I'm preparing for an X session, I'm starting the 'xdm'
with an init script and the X server via 'inittab' (-query <xdm host>). I
activate both by entering init runlevel 5.
Because of some reason the X server doesn't get a login window on the first
attempt, shuts down after XDMCP timeout and gets restarted by 'init'. On the
second try the 'xdm' opens a login window, I begin my X session and don't
get HW-accelerated OpenGL.

_But_, the snippets from XFree86.0.log I sent to this list ("Direct
rendering disabled") all stem from an X server startup _without_ even trying
to contact the 'xdm' - just by typing:

# ~> X <Return>

Probably Roland pointed to the right place but the issue still gets
triggered in different situations,

Martin.
