Probably. There should be some output to stderr in this case though.

I'm not sure X can do anything about this.
Is this using current CVS? Do any of the classic environment variables
like R200_NO_{CODEGEN,VTXFMT,TCL} make a difference?

You could try adding FatalError() calls in the driver or something.
