How about those parts of the world were software patents are not legal? Now I don't know much about how DRI architecture and I certainly haven't looked into the technical side of this, but would it be possible to have the S3TC extension as a plugin? Or if not, why not as a code fork (following the main branch closely) hosted somewhere it would be legal?
