What Michel is saying is that glxinfo and glxgears by default try to open the 
display at :0 and then continue. 

I suspect your starting the tdfx DRI on :0 and your rage128 on :1.

If you start rage128 on :0 and tdfx on :1 you'll see that the problem switches 
to the tdfx driver.

This was a bug in glxinfo & glxgears and has since been fixed. So upgrading to 
the CVS versions will remedy your problem.
