Just after installing the new X, have you performed 
1) warm restart 
               or 
2) you have switched the power off and did cold boot.

If the 1)st is true then it might be useful to examine your X installation
with an older kernel, I'd sugggest 2.4.18, i.e. install 2.4.18 as additional 
kernel and boot machine with it. Then try an application using DRI.

It is not excluded that I have corresponding problem and the both, mine and 
yours might be associated with a subtle behaviour of new kernels while 
initiating DRI. If you suspect this may have something in common,
might I suggest you to have a look on my messages of January, 14th, 17th.
