I don't doubt the crashes are caused by drm/dri, but it is completely impossible
that it is caused by this patch (for your chip at least). IGP 345 is r100 based,
and the only difference with this patch is that the drm will accept a command
packet which changes that tri_perf reg. Since the radeon driver never ever will
submit such a packet (r100 to my knowledge doesn't have that reg, only r200
does), there is absolutely zero difference if you use a drm driver with or
without that feature.
In any case, the drm itself is somewhat unlikely to cause the crashes, it
doesn't do that much and isn't changed very often (save for adding support for
new commands to emit, but in this case any bug would still be in the dri
driver). If the crashes happen when only using 2d, it's probably a bug in the
xorg ddx driver, if it happens only with 3d apps it's probably a bug in the dri
driver.
There are some other reports of infrequent lockups with radeons from all
different classes (r100, r200 and r300), some of them not happening with older
drivers but so far without any hint what would cause it. Maybe you should try
xorg cvs, because there are indeed changes there which DO fix some lockups
(though I can't see why those changes would cause any difference with those very
infrequent lockups).
