I did some more testing and found that I am able to switch VTs with the
latest git but only if I use the aewm++ window manager instead of compiz 
(same xorg.conf). I reset my compiz configuration but the system
crashed, so I'm guessing it has something to do with compositing.

With aewm++ the screen pauses for a couple of seconds when switching 
back to X from VT1 but X functions properly after that. With compiz, 
the top 1/3 of the screen goes black/multicolored and the system hangs. 

Prior to the memmap commit (dd8ee1b444f4b973a1e0fadca5f943f2162b5e94) 
the screen would show the same distortion but it would manage to return 
properly to X.
