How can a developer work on such a driver without sufficient documentation existing? Yes, with thousands of pages of actual manual (not just register dumps) you can do that. And yes, with access to the not-opensource-able driver, you can too. But without both? Very difficult. Both VIA and myself have a good relation to Greg K-H from the linux driver project.
