First off, +1 to the original proposal.

Second, the HCL mostly identifies devices that are known to work. It
doesn't do a lot to separate the split between devices that are known
not to work, and those that are completely unknown.

I'd really, really like to see us extend this project even further.
What I'd most like to see is a way to separate out some of the hardware
which *might* work with some combination of efforts, but which is
clearly inferior and should be avoided for new purchases.

Good examples of this are:

    * any WLAN chip from Broadcom -- they might work with limitations
under NDIS, but they will never be fully supported as long as Broadcom
refuses to embrace the community and at least make specs or sources
available.

    * recent ATI graphics parts -- ATI has been notoriously difficult to
deal with, and newer parts either work not at all, or lack proper 3D
acceleration or other features (this could change in the future).

    * certain raid storage adapter products, which may work, but have
more limitations and issues with compatibility, and probably defeat many
of the benefits of ZFS. (In particular, the cards where you can't
disable RAID mode are of concern -- this is true for some addin SATA
boards.)

    * Certain ethernet chips (all of the older ones) that are known to
have particularly buggy implementations which require performance
sapping workarounds or PIO. (Think dnet, etc.) Or which don't work
well with GLDv3 and newer features such as VLAN (e.g. 3com parts.)

There are probably others as well.

What might actually be a good idea is to have a buyers guide -- sort of
like the HCL -- which provides "recommendations" to the community as to
which mainboards, systems, and add-in devices should be purchased as a
first choice. The list would need to be kept more up to date than the
HCL. The other problem is that there may be problems with *Sun* running
such a project, since there might be problems with endorsing (or not
endorsing) certain unaffiliated products. But the community could run it.
