At least for this use of BIT operators, I think this would work. For the
rare cases where a work-around isn't feasible, at least there'd be a way to
add the necessary functionality.

Definitely want support for both v4 and v6. Since most addresses will be v4
for a long time, no sense in wasting 12 bytes. But there's enough v6 use
that it's gotta be supported too.
