I regard XML as a flavour of bulk-loading.
You can actually reach LOAD DATA performance through the normal INSERT
interface by using the right techniques.
I'd be in favour of a bulk-loading API which would really have a
higher performance than that, if possible (should be possible).
Also, things like UDP for webclick inserts (no ok/wait required), but
that's in part a protocol issue, which I intend to get involved in.
