Sooner or later, every project notices that each release is taking 2X
the previous release, and decides on regular releases. Brian has it
exactly write. If you're not on the bus, but next bus is coming soon.
That said, the mentality that xyz has to get into this release because
then next release may not happen in our lifetime is deeply ingrained and
very hard to shake. So is the idea that all software has bugs, so
shipping software with known bugs isn't the end of the world.
Bugs that give wrong answers or corrupt data are show stoppers.
Anything else can wait for the next release if the bug isn't found or
fixed by a release cutoff date. People should learn to accept the
criterion, "is this release better than the one in the field?" rather
than "is this release perfect". Nothing is perfect and all software has
bugs. Pretending otherwise stretches out releases, increasing the
pressure to get his bug fix or this feature in this release, further
stretching out the release.
So, if you're not on the bus, don't worry, the next bus will be leaving
soon...
