For the sake of argument, wouldn't the ideal way to deal with per index
collations be to use a functional index using convert (which IIRC has been
ripped out of Drizzle, or at least that is under discussion). MySQL does not
have functional indexes at this point, however evidently there is a set of
patches out there that implement them:

For that matter, shouldn't functional index be able to make Sheeri's desc
index issue go away?
