However, I do agree that this might confuse existing MySQL users.

If we were to make this change, we'll probably get a fair amount of inquires
on the mailing list about how "-p" doesn't behave as people expect. The
reason that I'm agreeing with this blueprint is because hopefully as time
(maybe after a year of Cirrus release?) passes it'll become common knowledge
that "-p" in Drizzle is for specifying the port like you would expect from
many other server software.

I'm being optimistic here but thats my 2 cents.
