Hi!
It would be really nice to know more about the hardware we are
targeting. For instance... if we know there is a huge trend moving to
SSD we can shape solutions to work better for SSD (with some obvious
tradeoff for disks). This also helps with setting defaults.
From a social stand point... if I develop an engine which is showing
user growth I will be interested in doing more development on that
engine.

It sounds like YAGNI unless there's specific information you're
looking for to answer certain questions.
