You might dig up what Hamilton has to say about blades. He argues
that increase density at a relatively high cost, but floor space is
cheapest part of a data center (after servers, cooling
infrastructure, power infrastructure).
just to throw in a random datapoint:
in my past we've had severe problems with racks of blades because a
new datacenter had a strict "no thermic hotspots" policy. the entire
server farm was geared towards minimizing floorspace, but with the new
datacenter that was no longer a concern. we simply couldn't fill the
racks anymore and ended up only filling them to a third to a half,
depending on the blades. what a waste. thermic and power density were
the limiting factors.
