This would probably be a pretty simple refactoring job :)

it's all key-value pairs to me... which smells a lot like some kind of
storage engine that has a local cache (almost federated-with-cache).
This would allow all sorts of fancy things (especially for clustered
engines) without writing much (if any) additional code.
