Hi Tim, It's interesting to see the variety of ways people solve that problem. The most common one I've seen is for cron jobs to run on both (assuming two) hosts and for the passive one ot exit early on once it realizes that it's not running on the active master.
But I can certainly see your point. I'm sure Brian or someone else will chime in and say whether it'd be reasonable to implement some sort of scheduler plug-in.
