Actually, /etc/init.d/mysqld is distro-specific and oftentimes is
written and maintained by the distros...

We don't have drizzled_safe. We also don't have drizzleadmin any more.
To shutdown or ping the server, just use the drizzle client:

drizzle --shutdown --port=XXXX
drizzle --ping --port=XXXX

Neither of these requires one to be logged-on to the box IIRC.  Just
supply a --host param.

There was talk of a --restart command to be added, too.

Well, describe what your ideal interface/API would look like.  What
would be the best tool for your needs?  How exactly would you want to
work remotely with the servers?  If you could give command-line (or
script) examples of what would be ideal, that would be great! :)
