With the overlay you can overwrite stuff on the original source tree, without touching it. It is intended for easier maintainability. Because you need to think how will you manage version upgrades... If you think the feature is worth sharing with the rest of the community, you should join the tech list and get in sync with the core devs regarding the best approach to your problem/solution you could do that matches their coding policy and design decisions they've made.
