There are two approaches to modifying DSpace. One is to place your modifications in the "overlay" directories under dspace/modules. If you are modifying an existing file, make a copy of it there, using the same directory structure found in the stock sources. If you are creating a new file, place it in the same relative directory as you would if you were creating it in the stock sources. Code for dspace-api goes in dspace/modules/additions. Code for other artifacts goes in dspace/modules/similar-name -- for example, your modified or new files for dspace-xmlui would go in dspace/modules/xmlui. The other approach is to use a code repository such as 'git', maintaining a local branch and modifying the stock code directly. If you keep a "vendor" branch with the stock DSpace code in it, it's easier to rebase your local branch on it when you want to upgrade to a new DSpace version. Which is best will be up to you. I'm accustomed to working with source code repository tools, and I find it painful to use the "overlay" method because then I can't use those tools for merging new DSpace versions. Some will prefer the "overlay" method. Whichever you choose, the community is here to help. -- Mark H.
