Dear Anna,

when you configure DSpace-CRIS there is no need to represent your
organizational structure using the DSpace communities, as they are entities in
DSpace-CRIS, and they can be populated using affiliations from the HR system in
your university, so they are always up to date. Departments in DSpace
communities become quickly messed up, as the representation is static while the
organizational units are dynamic, they split, merge, change names, people move
and so on.

Communities are used to group research outputs collections, usually you create
a top-level community called "Research Output" and you create collections
according to the type of materials you want to collect, with their specific
metadata, e.g. journal articles, proceedings, monographs, etc. You can create
other communities for research data, teaching materials, etc according to your
policies.

I hope this helps, it would be interesting to learn from other institutions'
experiences.

Claudio

Oggetto: [dspace-community] Configuration of Communities and Collections

Dear all

We (University of Bern, Switzerland) are now building a DSpace-CRIS and would
like to learn more about possible configurations with respect to communities
and collections. Are your communities rather subject-oriented or do they
reflect your organisational structure? Has anyone taken a different approach?
What are the pros and cons of your solution? How do you deal with collections
in your community structure?

It would be great if you could share your experiences. So, thank you very much
in advance!

Best regards
Anna
