Okay, I now realize this code I wrote last year indeed doesn't directly access the DSpace database. This is still my ultimate goal and I hope there is interest and help here to suggest some ways to accomplish this. Sorry about the brag, but I am slow in understanding all this and don't see any way of editing earlier posts.
