Hi Miguel,
The ability to support this feature request already exists in DSpace in the
form of the package ingester framework. See:
http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/PackagerPlugins
The SWORD interface uses this to accept single file package deposits (a zip
file containing files, and metadata in METS formal - mets.xml).
