Hello DSpace Developers,

In the essence of openness, I wanted to let you all know that,
unfortunately, DuraSpace was rejected from Google Summer of Code 2012.

At this time, it's unclear why our application was rejected. DSpace has
had an amazing run of GSoC acceptance for five years straight (2007-09
as DSpace Federation and 2010-11 as DuraSpace). It's just sad to see it end.

Obviously, this is disappointing to us all. DuraSpace is hoping that
Google will provide us with more feedback as to why our application was
rejected. At this point, all Google has sent us is the following general
statement:

"Unfortunately, we were unable to accept your organization's application
at this time. We received many more applications for the program than we
are able to accommodate, and we would encourage you to reapply for
future instances of the program."

In semi-related news: A few of us in #dspace IRC have been bouncing
around ideas as to whether we could still do some sort of informal
DSpace/DuraSpace "summer coding project" even without GSoC. If we manage
to organize such a thing, you all will be the first to know.
