Tim, maybe we're having a slight impedance mismatch here. You're saying DSpace doesn't require Solr. I agree. On the other hand, DSpace is currently built with Solr by default unless you disable it. I just don't see the problem in this particular thing.
Of course, to use XOAI with Solr, you have to configure the import cronjob, which is an additional step. So I understand the concern is really in this. Actually it's the same with Discovery - you also have to set up a cron job to fill its Solr index - and I guess that's why it isn't default just yet (and that it's relatively new). I'm just trying to identify the real problem.
