This needs a volunteer.
Several of us were discussing this again today informally. It seems much more reasonable to enhance the REST API for such reporting.
I'm not a fan of allowing other systems direct access to our DB (even if read only), as it could be seen as a security issue (read only DB access would also give you access to permissions set in DSpace, and even encrypted passwords, etc). In addition, you'd have to build multiple options based on the DB backend (which isn't scalable if you wanted to add new DB backends, like MySQL).
It'd be much better to generate a read-only API for reporting purposes. It may be an enhancement to the existing REST API, or even a new "restful" reporting API.
