This needs a volunteer to investigate options, and perform a more thorough analysis of use cases, etc. Author identity is a problem that goes well beyond the scopes of DSpace. It's not a simple issue, and simply trying to "map" names to DSpace users may not be enough (and it could even be inaccurate...how do you know if "Joe Smith" the author is the same "Joe Smith" who has a local DSpace account?). Likely this is needing something like ORCIDs to better identify individuals, and then map those ORCIDs to DSpace users (epeople) http://orcid.org/
